RealWorld Law Enforcement/Counterterrorism Sample Scenario

Local police receive call from the principal that there has been a hostage taking at the local high school. The main building houses over 2000 students, teachers and staff. The police must plan a coordinated response.

- The police plan a coordinated response with SWAT and hostage rescue teams to save the hostages and arrest the perpetrator in a true-to-life virtual high school campus in RealWorld.
- The teams study the 3D campus and buildings and plan ingress and anticipated escape routes along with necessary ground and helicopter coverage.
- The officers and SWAT team practice the mission together and identify ways to optimize communication and coordination.
- Hostages, hostage takers and key faculty are played by experienced members while massive numbers of student avatars are driven by RealWorld artificial intelligence.
- Various alternative scenarios are practiced to train the team in handling unexpected situations.
- Upon mission completion, the team uses RealWorld again for After Action Reviews (AAR) to discuss what went down and garner the lessons learned.
Virtual training enables training to more varied situations within scenarios and even allows practicing situations and responses that are impractical in real life due to cost and/or participant safety factors. In the sample scenario above, this includes changing the number of hostiles and hostages; their mental state/temperament; the weapons; the health of the hostages; etc.
Virtual training improves individual and team performance and allows for more training cycles in the same amount of time. Training can occur whenever the team member(s) have time — not just when they are formally scheduled.
